2. Article - Penggunaan ‘a’/’an’
A. Sebelum kata benda tunggal (singular countable noun), seperti:
- I need a visa
- They live in a flat
- He bought an ice-cream
- A car must be insured = All cars / Any car must be insured.
- A child needs love = All children need love / Any child needs love.
- It was an earthquake
- She'll be a dancer
- He is an actor
- not a
- many a
- Ther was quite a large crows in the street.
- Not a man volunteered. (=Not one man volunteered)
- Many a man has volunteered to fight for his country.
- Rather a large crowd gathered to hear the speaker.

- a dozen (one dozen juga memnungkinkan)
- a hundred/one hundred

- a thousand/one thousand
- 1 1/2 kilos = one and a half kilos/ a kilo and a half

- 1/2 kg = half a kilo (bukan
a half kilo) - a half-holiday

I. 'a’ juga bisa terletak sebelum kata ‘Mr/Mrs/Miss + Nama keluarga, seperti:
- a Mr. Smith
- a Mrs. Smith
- a Miss Smith
'a Mr. Smith' memiliki arti 'a man called Smith' (seseorang yang dipanggil
dengan nama 'Smith'), dan menunjukkan bahwa dia adalah orang yang
asing bagi si pembicara (speaker).
Sedangkan kata 'Mr. Smith' (tanpa 'a') menunjukkan bahwa si speaker tau/
kenal dengan Mr. Smith.
J. Sebelum kata ‘most’ yang memiliki arti ‘sangat’ (very) ® (informal), seperti:
- She is a most beautiful woman.
- She is the most beautiful woman I know.
[memiliki makna 'paling' /'ter']
K. Setelah kata ‘so’/’too’ +adjective +’a’/’an’ + singular noun, seperti:
- She is too sensible a girl to do a thing like that.
- She is so sensible a girl that she could not do a thing like that.
